This is what a 37-year renovation of a rundown $30,000 Queenslander looks like

Home Renovation of $30k took 37 years incredible transformation

  • It was a $30,000 cottage in Brisbane's Hawthorne that was so rundown, owner Helen Roebig's father told her to set it alight. If you were looking for some character renovation inspiration - you've found it...
  • AFTER: Built in 1910 and in a bad way, the facade was "ugly" according to Helen, but once the couple stepped inside, a picture began to form of the possibilities.
  • "When I went inside to the heart of the place and saw the veranda, then I could just see it... It all became a picture for me and all that ugliness was just superficial, so we went ahead and bought the house for $30,000," she continues.
  • BEFORE: The whole home had been cladded over, which the Roebig's removed piece by piece. The home was also covered in 'Mission Brown' coloured paint -- all the rage in the '70s and '80s.
  • AFTER: Over the years, the house was re-roofed as well as re-stumped. They laid a concrete slab down in order to create a two-level home.
  • BEFORE: Instead of going up, they actually dug out below, because of the heritage fireplace inside.
  • AFTER: Now, the four bedroom home is a perfect blend of old-world character charm and modern updates.
  • KITCHEN RENO: The largest portion of the renovation happened in 2004: the kitchen was converted into the main bedroom, and a new kitchen was created as part of a back extension. A large back deck was also added onto the property.
  • PROFESSIONAL RENOVATIONS: While the renovation took 37 years because the Roebigs did it themselves, bit by bit, the 2004 renovation was done by professionals.
  • NEW KITCHEN: The new kitchen comes with a double sink, rangehood, gas cooking, dishwasher and island bar topped with white stone - plus an open plan living and dining concept. (There's a formal lounge when you walk in the home).
  • LIVING AREA RENOVATION: The living/dining area opens to a wide back deck, which enjoys some pretty spectacular city skyline views across the river.
  • BEDROOM RENOVATIONS: The master bedroom showcases the classic charm of the home, with panelling and high, ornate ceilings. Character features in the home include pressed metal ceilings, polished hardwood floors and wide curved archways.
  • The rest of the house is just as impressive. Besides the big level back yard, two of the four bedrooms have direct access to bathrooms and walk-in robes, while a fifth room can double as a study or guest stay.
