How much does a kitchen cost?

A budget kitchen can be built for as little as $10,000, but the Australia-wide average spend is $17,000 and you can pay $100,000 or more if you really want the best.

How much does a kitchen cost? Ask a kitchen designer that question and they are likely to think, “How much do you want to spend?” Though they’ll put it more politely and show you your options. A better question might be: “What is the range of costs for a new kitchen?” This way, you can buy a kitchen that fits the area you have to cover and your budget, too.

New kitchen price ranges

The price of a new kitchen can vary dramatically. As a starting point:

  • Budget kitchens start at about $10,000 and go up to $25,000
  • Mid-range or standard kitchens range between $20,000 and $45,000
  • Luxury kitchens start at $45,000 and can go up to $100,000 or more

Materials play a big part in the cost of a kitchen, but your location will also make a difference. Australia-wide, the average cost of kitchen renovations is around $17,000, but in Sydney, the average cost of a basic kitchen renovation is approximately $23,000 and a standard kitchen costs close to $42,000.

Pricing your kitchen

Given the wide range of prices, how do you choose a kitchen you’ll enjoy without breaking the bank? Moving to a cheaper suburb is probably not in your best interest, so you’ll have to compare the costs of materials and other inclusions.

A good kitchen builder will make sturdy cabinets for every kitchen, but the visible components of the kitchen will determine whether you’re spending $10,000 or $50,000 on your kitchen. For example:

  • Melamine doors and drawer fronts are very inexpensive. Choose solid timber or gloss two-pack polyurethane and they will cost far more.
  • A laminate benchtop might cost $3000 while a natural or reconstituted stone benchtop could cost $10,000 or more.
  • An acrylic splashback might only cost a few hundred dollars. High quality tiles might cost thousands of dollars to install.
  • Appliances range in price from budget electric appliances to very expensive high-end appliances. You might pay $5000 for standard appliances. Upgrade to high-end appliances and they can easily cost two or three times more.

Unless you’re one of the lucky few, the price of your kitchen will make a difference. Even if you are able to afford the most expensive materials and appliances, is it always the wise thing to do, though? It depends on your lifestyle.

Those high gloss two-pack polyurethane doors will look fantastic when they’re installed, but if you have children running around the kitchen, they won’t look as good after they have a few scratches in them. Glossy finishes highlight scratches, so unless you want to make the kitchen a no-go zone for the kids, you’re probably better off choosing something else.

Asking how much a kitchen costs isn’t a silly question, but it is one that can’t be answered until your kitchen has been measured and you have chosen your materials, appliances and other inclusions.

If you’ve gone over-budget, you can always make compromises, but don’t compromise on the quality of construction. Cabinets must be well built and if given the choice, choose better quality hinges, drawers and drawer runners.

Whether your kitchen costs $10,000 or $75,000, the quality of construction will make the difference between a kitchen you’ll love to work in and one that’s a nuisance every time you open a drawer or door.
